Division 2 Football League Round 1 - 27th February

Churchtown 1-11

Shanballymore 1-07

On Sunday last our Junior B Footballers went down to a physical Churchtown team in the opening tie of the Division 2 football league, This was our first game since last May's Championship and it told, With little training done as well it took the team time to gel. But wayward shooting also led to our downfall. Two frees were missed early on and another straight forward shot was badly off target . With Brian Barry, Haulie Burke and Pa Sheedy playing well chances were being created, But after ten minutes we were caught cold when a through ball was not cleared and it ended up in our net. Brian slotted over two frees but we conceded two ourselves. With three debutants in the team men were being out muscled in close exchanges, We conceded four more points but Brian struck back with three four us,. The half time score Churchtown 1-6 Shanbayymore0-5. A switch brought Brian Barry to midfield for the second half and with Haulie and we started to get on top., but a plethora of wides left us vulnerable and we went twenty minutes without raising a flag. Churchtown began to add to their tally but up front we were struggling. Brian pointed a free and then got a great goal and was unlucky when a great shot was well saved by the keeper. A goal at this juncture would have brought us right back.

Just before the end a punched effort rolled across the face of goal but in the end defeat was our lot . Still it was a positive performance and will be beneficial in the long run. George Murray, Anthony Chawke, Padraig and Eamonn Fitzgerald made their first starts for us and we were minus five influential players as well., Also to play well were Alan Seedy, Blondie and Jonathon Dennehy, So it's on to Charleville on the next Sunday to play the home stars.
