Churchtown overcome Shanballymore challenge - Friday 10th June
Churchtown 3-12
Shanballymore 2-13
Newcomers to the Junior (A) H.C. Churchtown got off to a winning
start in this year痴 championship when they held out for a two point win over
Shanballymore at Charleville on Friday evening last.
The opening half was closely contested with Shanballymore opening the scoring
when Paul Burke pointed in the first minute. Churchtown took the lead four
minutes later and were to stay in front for the rest of the game when Kieran
Curtin fired home a close in free.
Both sides exchanged points with Micheal Burke cutting the lead to a point in
the 21st minute when he pointed a free 1 - 2 to 0 - 4. Churchtown opened up a
four point lead soon after when a long puckout by the Churchtown keeper Padraigh
Morrissey led to John Breen soloing over 40 yards to score a great goal from an
acute angle. Shanballymore responded immediately and went down the field. A foul
on Paul Burke led to a penalty in which Eddie Roche made no mistake. Brian Quinn
and Pa Sheedy exchanged a point with Quinn and Micheal Burke adding another.
In the first half there was a hold up in the game for several minutes due to a
facial injury to a Shanballymore player and in the additional time in this half
Churchtown finished in style with John Maher, Tony O'Flaherty, Kieran Curtin,
John Breen, Thomas Fehin and Brian Quinn all finishing strongly. Thomas Fehin
had a goal and four quick points which gave the winners a 3 - 8 to 1 - 7 lead at
half-time.
In the second-half Shanballymore made a number of positional changes which
worked well and they began to cut into Churchtown's lead. Both sides had an
early point with Eamonn Fitzgerald getting a point for Shanballymore in the 37th
minute. Churchtown responded with a point from a free from Brian Quinn.
Shanballymore began to enjoy their best spell and had a goal in the 41st minute
when Kenneth Barry and Michael O'Donovan combined well to set up Paul Burke for
a well taken goal 3 - 10 to 2 - 9.
Further pressure saw Vincent Burke and Michael O'Donovan have a point each to
cut the lead to two points with 13 minutes remaining. Shanballymore were unable
to reduce the lead anyfurther with Churchtown able to retain their two point
cushion from here to the final whistle.
Churchtown held out for a deserved win with Shanballymore now meeting Kilshannig
in the losers section.

Hurling Challenge Match - Thursday 17th March
Freemount 0-11
Shanballymore 1-07
We travelled to Churchtown to play a strong Freemount side on St. Patrick痴 Day. We lined out with four minors due to defections but the team surprised us with some splendid play. With a sprightly breeze at our backs we took the game to Freemount and opened the scoring with a point from Vincy splendidly taken from a long range free. A great move started by Vincy taken on by Brian Barry was put Pa through for a tremendous goal. With Brian and young Niall Roche on top at midfield we had a good supply of ball but found the going tough. Points from Pa, Vincy and Noel Roche had us ahead at the break by 1-04 to 0-03. A fine Declan point opened the second half. But Freemount playing with the breeze came more into the game and forced us into fouling and they outscored us by 0-08 to 0-03. Our other scores coming from Pa and Vincy. A feature of this game was we finished with six minors, which looks good for the future. Jonathon Lenihan has conceded no goal from two matches and others to play well were Alan Sheedy and Mick Donovan in the full back line and Paudie Fitzgerald at wing back. Scores: P Sheedy 1-02. V Burke 0-03. N Roche 0-01, D Fits 0-01.

Glanworth 0-10
On Saturday March 12th we travelled to Glanworth to play the home side and the result was a convincing win. For the first ten minutes we were at sea and with sloppy play and missed placed passes were the norm. Glanworth opened brightly and soon had three points on the board,. A good point from vincey Burke was soon followed by one from Pa sheedy. A right wing free from Pa rebounded from the upright sand was slapped to the net by Declan Fitzgibbon playing now at full forward. This score galvanised our our boys and they began to play some good hurling. More points followed from Paul and Vincey, Pa and Brian Barry. Glanworth tacked on a few points but were hit by a stunning goal from Vincey. The first half scoring was completed by a goal from Paul Burke
Half time score Shanballymore 3-06 Glanworth 0-8.
The first score of the second half was from Eddie Roche playing in the unfamiliar role of Centre forward. When Brian Barry tapped the next ball to the net the game was over as a contest. The selectors introduced four subs at this juncture but we continued on top, Points from Vincie, Haulie, 2 from Pa and 2 great scores from Noel Roche and Eamonn Fitzgerald completed a good day's work.
